Drop Ship News: Use Google Suggest to Boost E-Commerce Traffic

September 8th, 2010

If you have an online dropship business or other ecommerce endeavor, you are probably already aware of how important keywords are to the amount of traffic your site gets, but if you aren’t using Google “suggest,” you might be losing a lot of sales!

What is Google Suggest?

Think of one of the best keywords or keyword phrases for your niche, and type it into the Google search box.

For example, use the keyword phrase “pet grooming supplies” and this is what you will see on the Google search results page in the drop down menu:

drop ship news Google screenshot

This gives you some very valuable information about the most popular Google searches! In some cases, Google will provide locally relevant searches, but overall you will get a great look at what phrases or words viewers use the most when searching within your particular niche.

This inside information can be tremendously helpful in driving traffic to your online dropship business with the use of targeted keywords!

You may be quite surprised to find keywords and long tail keywords using the Google suggest feature that hadn’t occurred to you previously.

Besides that, if you enter one of your best keywords or phrases into the Google search box, you will see what online viewers see when they institute a search for the same keyword/s.

This is something that is helpful to know!

The more information you have at your disposal about what viewers will see on Google when they are searching within your niche—the better.

Now, you can take this one step further by continuing on in the same vein and looking at what Google shows for the keyword phrase “pet grooming supplies” in the way of related searches:

Here again you can benefit greatly by knowing what Google will suggest to searchers within your niche!

Using Google to refine and target the keywords for your online dropship business can help boost traffic and sales!

Drop Ship News: Changes to Shipping Options for eBay Sellers

September 6th, 2010

If you have an eBay online dropship business or are an eBay seller of any type, you should be paying attention to the new changes coming concerning shipping.

These changes in shipping options were announced back on July 13th as part of the Fall Seller Updates, and are set to go live on September 20th.

Here is what eBay has to say about these changes:

“Industry-standard shipping terms—Economy, Standard, Expedited and One Day —are coming  the week of September 20th. These shipping options will be displayed prominently along with estimated delivery time on the item page and in checkout. Listings will be automatically updated with the new terms. If you currently use “Standard Flat Rate Shipping”, “Expedited Flat Rate Shipping” or “Other (see description)” you may want to update your listings with one or more of the new options.”

eBay’s theory is that this change will save time for sellers because questions about shipping cost and time of delivery are key reasons why buyers or prospective buyers contact sellers.

So, eBay says that starting this month, shipping options will be prominently displayed with an expected time of delivery time frame using “industry standards.”

Buyers, eBay says, will have a familiar, consistent experience, clear choices and the right expectations for delivery.

eBay claims that this will make for a more streamlined experience for sellers since they won’t have to spend as much time answering shipping related questions, and also improve DSRs.

Doesn’t this all sound just wonderful?

Yes, it does.

However, many sellers feel that there is a fly in the honey. Why? Because there will only be four shipping options with the estimated time frame for delivery as follows:

  1. Economy: 1-10 business days
  2. Standard: 1-5 business days
  3. Expedited: 1-3 business days
  4. One-day: One business day

These estimated delivery times are supposed to factor in the sellers handling time.

So, if you sell items that weigh less than 13 ounces and have been using First Class Mail, this will apparently fall under “Standard Delivery” and have a delivery time of 1-5 business days.

That doesn’t allow much of a handling time for the seller, does it?

Furthermore, how is that supposed to furnish the buyer with a better idea of when to expect their widget? There is quite a difference between one day and five days!

Besides, with standard shipping, even Priority Mail, do we honestly believe something is going to be delivered in as little as ONE day?

Of course not.

So, as usual, eBay’s changes will just muddy the already murky water on the marketplace. You should be watching for these changes and adapt your online dropship sales eBay listings accordingly.

Drop Ship News: Shopping Cart Tips for E-Commerce

September 5th, 2010

If you have an online dropship business or other ecommerce endeavor, you might benefit from some handy shopping cart tips and tricks!

In a study of 165 million shoppers conducted by McAfee last fall entitled “Digital Window Shopping: The Long Journey to Buy,” the research showed some interesting statistics:

  • Sales conversions were 11% higher on web sites that displayed a security seal.

  • 65% of online shoppers take a looong time in making their final purchase. In fact, there is an average delay of nearly 34 hours from a decision to buy to providing credit card numbers.

That sounds a bit extreme, but maybe this time frame is allowing for online comparison shopping before purchasing.

At any rate, several useful pointers can be gleaned from the McAfee study.

Here are some shopping cart tips that will help you increase your conversion rate, boost sales and minimize abandoned shopping carts in your online dropship business, the bane of every ecommerce entrepreneur’s existence:

  • Make sure that your shopping cart is secure! The last thing you want is for some hacker to get into your customer data and leave a trail of destruction with your customers’ credit cards and financial information.

  • To show customers that your website is secure and therefore safe for them to divulge their credit card or bank account numbers, display the little yellow padlock symbol and tell viewers what it means.

  • Don’t ask people to enter their payment information such as credit card or bank account numbers before you divulge the shipping charge and sales tax if applicable. This practice looks shady and many potential customers will simply hit the back button and then WHAM!—you’ve lost a sale.

  • Don’t make the all-too-common mistake of requiring prospective customers to register with your website before making a purchase. This is probably one of the biggest causes of abandoned shopping carts! If someone is ready to buy, for heaven’s sake….let them buy! You can ask for registration after the sale.

Using these helpful shopping cart tips in your online dropship business will help increase your bottom line!

Drop Ship News: A Heads Up For eBay Sellers!

September 5th, 2010

If you have an online dropship business and sell on eBay or are any other kind of eBay seller, you need to be aware of a significant change included in the Fall Updates!

Announced under the heading “Streamline Buyer Communications” in the eBay Fall Seller Updates announcement, eBay announces that it is moving the “Ask a Question” link to the bottom of the page.

According to an eBay Customer Support Representative, this change is currently being tested on approximately 25% of eBay viewers.

What does it mean to sellers?

In one word: Disaster.

What does it mean to eBay?

In two words: More Money.

First of all, think about how this will impact your online dropship business sales on eBay:

Many buyers need to ask a question before bidding. Regardless of how thorough you may think your description is, you can chalk it down that there will be some buyers who will think of something that needs addressing NOT covered in your description.

At that point, they click the “Ask a Question” link and send you, the seller, their question.

Simple, right?

Wrong.

For many years, this “Ask a Question” link has been on the right side of the page, at the top, along with “See Other Items” and “Save This Seller.”

Save This Seller is certainly appropriate because many sellers will need saving when eBay sales—already waaaaay down due to over two years of the current CEO’s “disruptive innovations”—totally tank because buyers are unable to ask sellers a question.

Now, not to be misleading, there is a link to ask a question.

Guess where?

All the way down at the very bottom of the page.

How will buyers know to look for the link down there?

They won’t.

But, the few that do scroll all the way down the page to the bottom in search of the missing link will be treated to the eBay ad for its credit card and other sellers’ similar items.

Oh happy day! Now eBay is gouging its sellers for outrageous fees to advertise the competition’s listings!

Presently, the only ad that will benefit eBay is the plug for their credit card, but one must suspect that new ads are in the making, hence the true reason for relocating the Ask a Question link to the bottom of the page.

Again, yet another Disruptive Innovation that will seriously impact already depressed sales.

Thanks, eBay!

If you have online dropship sales or other sales on eBay, it would be a good idea to edit your listings to include the information about where to locate the Ask a Question link, preferably at the top of the page where buyers can actually see it!

Drop Ship News: Your E-Commerce Business Needs a Good Tagline

September 4th, 2010

If you have an online dropship business or other ecommerce enterprise, you would benefit greatly from creating a great tagline to help build your brand and promote your business!

What is a tagline?

In a nutshell, a tagline is a short, snappy slogan that is catchy and easy for people to remember and hopefully associate with your business.

A tagline is probably the best ad you will ever write!

You may hear these phrases referred to as slogans, catchphrases, marketing lines or trademark lines. However, for the most part, these little one liners are called taglines.

The most famous taglines are more or less a call to action:

  • Just Do It
  • Where’s the Beef?
  • Let Your Fingers Do the Walking
  • A Diamond is Forever
  • And more

These taglines became household words because they are everything a great tagline should be!

Now, to create your own tagline for your online dropship business, be prepared to put your thinking cap on and devote some serious thought to what would constitute a fantastic tagline specifically for you.

There are several steps in making a great tagline:

  • Link one of your product features with an abstract need. For example: Bayer Aspirin—Bayer Works Wonders. Or this one from Burger King: Have it Your Way. What specific need does your product fill? This is what your tagline should describe.

  • Make a promise! Tell people what your product will do for them. For instance: Cascade dishwasher detergent’s tagline: For Virtually Spotless Dishes. This is short and to the point, Cascade promises (virtually) spotless dishes. What can you promise that your product will do?

  • Keep it short! Coke’s famous tagline is an excellent example of this: The Pause That Refreshes. It describes what need is fulfilled and makes a promise in just four little words. When writing a tagline, remember that less is more!

  • If possible, tie your tagline to your logo. The old Esso (now Exxon) logo was a tiger; hence their tagline “Put a Tiger in Your Tank.” If you don’t have a logo, there’s no time like now to come up with one!

A great tagline can help grow your online dropship business or other internet endeavor, and like the Energizer Bunny, it will keep on going….and going….and going…..

Drop Ship News: How Time Management Can Benefit You

September 3rd, 2010

If you have an online dropship business or other ecommerce enterprise, you might be surprised at how you could streamline your efforts to produce more results in less time if you practiced good time management techniques.

In other words, you can manage your internet business much more efficiently if you learn how to work smarter instead of harder!

Time management is one of the most important areas in the life of a home ecommerce entrepreneur.

Just think about it.

You don’t have a time clock to punch or a boss or supervisor to monitor your workday. All that stands between you and a one way ticket to the Poorhouse is your own self discipline.

Kind of scary, isn’t it?

In fact, failure to manage time wisely is one of the top reasons so many home businesses come to grief within the first year!

Basically, time management can help you take control of your own success or failure. If you learn to make every hour of your workday count without frivolously wasting time on non-essential things that won’t help your ecommerce business one iota, you have taken a giant step toward success!

Here are some tips to help you use effective time management techniques:

  • Plan your work and work your plan. Everyone, regardless of how organized or efficient they may be, needs to have a clear plan with definite objectives and a well thought out To Do List. If you have no idea where to start every morning or what you need to accomplish that day—you are like a ship adrift on the ocean with nobody at the helm.

  • If your workspace or home office isn’t organized for optimal efficiency, do it now! If your work area is a disorganized clutter, sloppy and messy…your work will be the same!

  • Learn to prioritize! First things first should be one of your golden rules. If there is a pressing task that needs to be done ASAP, do it before something less important. For example, if eBay is offering free listings for one day, and you have a lot of new items you are planning to list for your dropship sales business, put everything you can on the back burner and get those items listed to save fees!

There are a lot of other handy time management tactics, but if you use just those three in your home dropship business, you’ll be ahead of the game!

Boost Dropship Sales With Good Selling Techniques

August 31st, 2010

If you have an online dropship sales business, you can boost sales significantly and add to your bottom line simply by using a few simple tried-and-true techniques.

Making sales, whether in a traditional brick and mortar store or face to face environment, or in the virtual world of the internet; relies on a foundation of principles and techniques that have stood the test of time because they work.

If you take the time to familiarize yourself with these principles and tactics, your sales will increase!

Here are a few tips to help you use good salesmanship to increase profits in your home dropship business:

  • Advertise! The internet is a huge place! In order to get traffic and potential customers, you will have to let people know who you are, what you’ve got and how to find you. It can be a little tough to make yourself let go of the money for PPC, for example, but you must bite the bullet and do it in order to make sales! Do some keyword research and try drilling down within your niche for lesser used long tail keywords that will cost much less for PPC ads, as well as better target and refine your traffic.

  • Ask for the sale! Too many ecommerce entrepreneurs come to grief because of this one little thing. It is essential that you ask for the sale! Tell visitors exactly what you want them to do next, every step of the way. Make it easy for them! Don’t make potential buyers have to think too much during the buying process or you will probably lose the sale. Your aim is to intuitively think for them and guide them right on through checkout.

  • Show your appreciation! Again, this is an all too common failing in ecommerce. Maybe it’s because internet business is so techno and there is no face to face encounter, but many online merchants forget to say “Thank You.” Always thank your customers after a sale and be sure to invite them back to shop with you again. In fact, offer a coupon or incentive for a set amount or percentage off their next purchase to make it worth their while to become a repeat customer.

If you employ these techniques, you will see an increase in your dropship website sales!

Making Money With Dropship Sales on eBay: What NOT to Do

August 31st, 2010

There are many entrepreneurs making money with eBay dropship sales, but there are some pitfalls you must avoid in order to succeed.

eBay is a different environment for selling than most other internet marketplaces.

In a nutshell, there isn’t a whole lot of room for mistakes on eBay. Either your mistakes or those that your customers might make that cause them to leave low Detailed Seller Ratings and bad feedback for you.

A smallish seller on eBay, dropship sales or otherwise, can only have approximately 2-3 customers in a years time that leave them unfair ratings and/or feedback and then—wham!—they’re suspended!

You can see why there isn’t much margin for error here or any wiggle room at all.

What this boils down to is that there is no learning period on eBay. New sellers are held to the same standards as more seasoned sellers.

So, it is crucial to your success as a dropship seller on eBay that you take the time to acquaint yourself with all of the many policies, rules, perils and pitfalls that you will have to deal with if you are going to survive there.

Here are some things you should NOT do if you want to succeed on eBay:

  • Fail to learn and understand the rules and policies. If you don’t know what not to do, you might do it and inadvertently cause problems for yourself. For instance, one policy is that you are not allowed to use the full name of a celebrity in your title line unless that name is the name of the product. So, if you were selling a dress that looks like one Sarah Jessica Parker might have worn in Sex and the City, you cannot use her name in the title. If, on the other hand, you are selling one of the Sarah Jessica Parker Perfumes—it’s okay. You must know the rules to avoid breaking them!

  • Fail to give a realistic time frame for delivery of the item. Most buyers will be fine with an approximate delivery date as long as you’re honest and upfront about it. If you try to fudge on that and tell them to expect it sooner…..you will have unnecessarily created unhappy customers that will probably leave bad ratings and feedback for you.

  • Fail to give accurate descriptions and photos. This is another thing that will come back to bite you in the bottom! Tell the truth about whatever you are selling. Provide great descriptions and photos so that buyers know what to expect when it arrives.

These are only a few of the big No-Nos for dropship eBay sellers, but paying attention to them will be beneficial to you!

E-Commerce Dropship Sales: How to Be a Better Social Media Marketer

August 30th, 2010

If you have an online dropship business or another ecommerce enterprise, you might be interested in some quick tips that will help you be a better social media marketer.

Social media marketing is huge!

More and more ecommerce entrepreneurs as well as big brands such as Coke, Starbucks, Proctor & Gamble and many others have discovered the benefits of jumping on the social media bandwagon.

Social media marketing affords a small home business the same opportunities as any of the big brands!

If you go about it right, you can help build your brand and promote your online dropship business by leveraging the awesome power of social media.

Here are a few tips to help you be a better social media marketer:

  • Choose the social platform that is right for your business. Every social site does not lend itself well to every type of business. For instance, Bebo is a very popular social site that is comprised mainly of younger users. If your dropship business deals mostly in products more suitable for senior citizens; such as motorized wheelchairs and bedside commodes—you will probably be wasting your time on this particular social site.

  • Don’t over-do the sales hype! This is a stumbling block and ultimate land mine for many small business entrepreneurs. Anxious to grow traffic and sales, they tout their products too much and start off on the wrong foot with other site users. Of course it’s fine to promote your business, but do it subtly and don’t make every post or tweet about what you are trying to sell.

  • Make a commitment of time spent in social media marketing and don’t try to take too many shortcuts. You must realize from the outset that social media marketing, in order to be done most effectively, is going to require a certain amount of time and effort. Don’t skimp on this or your results will reflect your lack of effort.

These are just a few handy tips that will help you be a better social media marketer for your home dropship business.
