The Right Set of Makeup Brushes
March 22nd, 2012Any artist knows that the right set of brushes are essential if a work of art is to turn out the way he or she has planned it out to be. Brushes come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, materials and stiffnesses, and picking the right one for the job can spell the difference between utter disaster or remarkable success. Serious artists often go to great lengths to get the right brushes, even spending a fortune on expensive brushes made with rare, hard to obtain natural fibers.
The same is true when applying makeup, because just as an artist works on a canvas or on paper to create art, so do you work on the canvas that is your face with your makeup to create art — of course, not striking and controversial art, but beautiful, alluring, and seductive, instead. Just as with the artist having the right set of brushes for his work, so too, should you have the right set of makeup brushes if you want to get the most out of yourself whenever you do your makeup.
So does that mean that you have to spend a fortune on expensive professional makeup brushes? The answer is no. As long as you know what brushes you need and the qualities of good brushes, you need not spend a fortune on expensive brushes. That is unless, of course, you are yourself a professional makeup artist and really have very, very high expectations of your makeup brushes. But for normal, everyday use, inexpensive brushes from online wholesalers will do perfectly as long as they are made from the right materials.
Choosing the Right Set of Makeup Brushes
Good makeup brushes are all about good materials. A good set of makeup brushes will have brushes that are usually made of natural fiber for soft brushes and special synthetic fibers for harder brushes. A set of makeup brushes can be divided into to smaller sets. A set for the eyes and a set for the face.
Eyes
There are four main brushes that you will need to achieve eye makeup perfection. Although there are other brushes intended for applying makeup to your eyes, it’s likely you will be using these four most of the time: a flat stiff brush, a stiff dome brush, a soft dome brush, and a pencil brush.
Flat Stiff Brush
The flat stiff brush is for packing on color to the eyelid. The stiffness of this brush allows it to pick up more color. A good flat stiff brush is usually made of high grade synthetic fiber or horse hair.
Stiff Dome Brush
The stiff dome brush is used for making smoky eye effects. It also needs to be stiff to allow it to pick up more color. A good stiff dome brush is also made of either high grade synthetic fiber or horse hair.
Soft Dome Brush
The soft dome brush is for creating softer blends, and so shouldn’t pick up as much color. Good soft dome brushes are usually made of soft synthetic fibers or wool, but there are very nice soft dome brushes that don’t cost a fortune that are made of the preferred material: mink hair.
Pencil Brush
The pencil brush is used as a smudger or for creating more defined creases. These are usually made of stiff synthetic fiber or horse hair.
Face
Like the set of brushes for the eyes, there are also four main brushes for the face: the stippling brush, the angled brush, the contour brush, and the highlighter brush. The first two you are likely to use every single day, the highlighter brush and the contour brush are not particularly essential, but do come in handy and are a welcome addition to any good makeup kit.
Stippling Brush
The stippling brush is used to create an airbrushed effect. These brushes need to hard so that they can pick up enough color to make the effect appreciable and so that they do not cause streaking when the makeup is applied. Some stippling brushes are made of horse hair, but artificial fiber, because it can be made stiffer, usually wins out in this case.
Angled Brush
The angled brush is usually used for applying blush. This brush should be soft so that it doesn’t pick up to much color. This brush can also replace the contour brush, and is especially useful for beginners, as the angle of the brush makes it easier to apply color when working on contours.
Contour Brush
The contour brush is used to create a contour the cheekbones to help make your face look slimmer. This brush shouldn’t be particularly fluffy, but should be soft. This brush is usually made of artificial mink hair.
Highlighter Brush
The highlighter brush has many uses and needs to be particularly soft. Many highlighter brushes are made of a combination of two types of soft material, but there are also many inexpensive highlighter brushes made of artificial mink hair that will do the job quite well. The highlighter brush can be used to make light applications of foundation, it can be used to apply small amounts of blush, or any other job that requires a smaller, softer brush.

Unlike the movies, in the real world and despite the popular perception, the modern spy does not work alone. There is always a team backing him up, making sure that he’s still on track, that the mission is still going as planned.
You’ve probably seen this device in at least one spy movie. The spy places a gadget on a bare wall and suddenly he can hear everything that’s going on on the other side. It carries that inherent “coolness” everyone imagines a spy gadget naturally should have. The through wall listening device works by amplifying the sound vibrations that move through walls so that they can become audible to the human ear.
The very second you enter the world of espionage, you have to remember that it’s not just a one way thing. Being a spy is just as much about not being spied upon as you doing the spying. You have to be on your toes every minute, aware about your surroundings so that you know exactly what is going on around you.
